Self-segregation
In many of the articles that called Michigan the most segregated state in the US, they used housing discrimination to explain why this segregation is happening. But I think that people in the world today kind of self segregate themselves from other ethnic groups. This self-segregation gives people a sense of comfort as the people they live with are similar to them and therefore cares more about each other. The housing discrimination example used in one of the articles is also caused by self-segregation. The article talks about how whites and African Americans are moving further and further into the suburban areas like a giant ring that is always expanding. Each ethnic group moved out of the cities in a group which caused the ring-like expansion of the people leaving for the suburban areas. We can see here that there were no restrictions for where each ethnic group has to be, they all moved in a group by their own choice. They are choosing to become more segregated instead of all blending together to form a truly diverse community. This is just one example of self-segregation; we can also see this problematic pattern in schools.
Let's just take the school we are most familiar with - Troy High School - as an example. We can see many instances where self-segregation affects students. During lunch, there are no restrictions for where people have to sit except for people with nut allergies. However, if you walk in the cafeteria during lunch, you will notice a pattern. Asians tend to sit together, Whites tend to sit together, and African Americans tend to sit together. We can also see this in many of the sports offered at Troy high. Some sports are dominated by Asians like Tennis, some sports are almost entirely white like sailing. This pattern can be observed in so many aspects of student life at Troy High: clubs, class selections, the friends you make, etc. Self-segregation is actually causing some big issues, one being more stereotyping of other races. Because each race only commutes with themselves, there is no racial or ethnical exchange of information or traditions. This causes more stereotypes to emerge like Asians have cannot see because they have small eyes, Whites always go to the bathroom to vape or African Americans like watermelons. There are a few dozens of stereotypes that are even worse than the ones I listed. This causes our diverse school to be not really diverse, but instead just having people with different ethnicities or races.
Our school is an accurate representation of the real world where the same problem is happening. People tend to stick with their own group of similar people instead of trying to integrate themselves and form truly diverse communities. This problem will not be easy to solve, and we need everyone to change their mindset to have more cultural exchanges between races or ethnicities.
It's interesting how the problem of segregation stems from the people themselves not wanting to integrate with the other groups (self-segregation). I really liked that you connected this with Troy High. Even though, it's one of the seemingly "most diverse" school, it's really just a school with a bunch of diverse people.
